Next step is the roof.

The door and window frames for Koshika's house were donated to MagéLanka by well-wishers!  We only had to pay labor charges to the carpenter to resize the frames.

One door was donated by Pesala Jayawardene. Shanika Abeyratne donated another door and glass blocks to add light to the house.

We are looking for donors for electrical and plumbing materials, so let us know if you know someone who can help!

We've got the land!
Sunil & Dilly finalized everything to buy the land in Angulana on Monday, Oct. 6. The property owner works for the forces in Vavuniya. He came down to the Ratmalana area for a few days, so the lawyer checked out the deeds and cleared everything for the purchase at Rs. 400,000, and Rs. 15,000 for the government stamp duty. The deed is written under the names of Koshika and her three sons.

We have raised about Rs. 460,000 (US $4,600), which we are still collecting from our lovely MagéLanka ambassadors. The rest of the proceeds will stay in Koshika's Housing Fund at the bank to go toward the cost of construction. We've got a start, with Rs. 45,000 (US $450), and we've got a lot more to do!

THANKS!
Our sincere thanks to the lawyer Mr. Sepala Boralessa, who finalized the legal documentation of the purchase, Mr. Tudor Siriwardene (surveyor) and Mr. Ganamini Sumanasena (valuer), who donated their precious time and effort free of charge. Thanks to everyone who has been helping towards the cause - we couldn't do anything without volunteers around the world who have been giving out books and collecting donations.

Land found! Must raise US $4,000 by Oct. 1 to secure it!
We have now identified a four perch block of land, inland and a safe distance from the sea. The cost per perch is Rs 100,000/=, so we need Rs 400,000/= (approximately 4,000 USD) for the land. We already have Rs 153,000/= in Koshika's bank and if the books move fast, we can finalize the transaction! The owner is willing to hold it until the end of this month, after which time he will sell it to someone else.

Our initial idea was to find land at Rs 50,000/= per perch, which we found impossible due to the high cost of land. We didn’t want to go very far from their current area, because then Koshika would have to spend more on bus fare, her husband would have to find work elsewhere, and they would have to move their children to a different school.

This location is ideal to build the house. The estimated cost of building would be Rs 350,000/= so our target right now is to collect donations for 750 books as soon as possible and everyone’s help would be greatly appreciated. The lawyer, surveyor and valuation officer very willingly agreed to give their services free of charge since this is a charitable cause.

The search for land
We're getting a great response on the books, thank you to everyone who is purchasing and selling them! Now that we have some money collected through book sales, we've started searching for a piece of property near Ratmalana to build Koshika's house on. The search is a bit tough - land value is very high in this busy area, but we want to make sure Koshika and her family are near enough to Ratmalana and surrounding areas so that she can maintain her work relationships.

Dilly has been checking out properties, let us know if you have any ideas! magelanka@gmail.org

Also, if you are interested in donating directly to Koshika's Housing Fund bank account, set up at the Commercial Bank - Ratmalana Branch, please contact us and we'd be happy to supply you with the neccessary information to do so.
